Do Anything You Want

Because of the Servicing Learning for Children Center, I have a lot of opportunities to get close to American Children. I still remeber the first impression which they gave me is “crazy”. Because they often shouted loudly while they were playing games and put their hearts and soul completely into the game. Sometimes they made themselves very dirty and even tumbled over the ground. But at that moment, the adults didn’t raise the children from the ground and usually let them pick themselves up and go on playing. Once when I was working at the Children Center, I tried to raise the child who fell down, but to my surprise, he didn’t accept my help. In addition, American adults seldom interfered with their children's game, so children could play with their friends freely and do anything they want. In my view, “Do anything you want” is most admiring place for Chinese children, but usually it’s also far away from them. One of my teachers said to me before I left China: Today we study hard and learn English in order to get a good job so that our children can live as American Children, having the time of their lives. He said that because he had realized that he didn’t want his children to live like us, and our children should do anything they want. Once Jay asked me to his professor party, and the professor comes from China, but his daughter was born in America and living in America. She spoke English fluently and did anything as an American child. Although she looks like a Chinese girl, and except for that, she was a pure American. She just chose anything she enjoys in her life such as clarinet, skiing and Wii—when I was childhood, I never know what I want. Because parents had already told me what I should do. So I didn’t consider this problem until I went abroad. But now, “Do anything I want and go my way” always haunts my mind.

The Westernize Marriage in China

According to this topic, there is no doubt that I should introduce the status of men and women in China at first. In the traditional custom, the status of men usually higher than women because most people thought man was stronger than woman in many aspects. So at the ancient time, the wives usually listened to the husbands and just follow him in daily life, so they have no choice of their marriage. Most families were stable; the divorce rate was very low. But as the development of society, the western culture is flooding into China including the custom of marriage. Women are treated as well as men and even sometimes better than men. So they can choose their marriage gradually, and the divorce is also one of the aspects which reflect the infiltration of western culture. In recent decades, the divorce rate has multiplied geometrically becuse many women have the power can choose their husbands; in contrast,  sometimes the men can’t choose their wives because of the large number. In addition, the rate of violence and dispute of families also shows an upward trend. So at the same time of social progress, we must consider these questions which have happened.

People's Representatives

I still remember that when I was a high school student, my English teacher showed us the video of Obama’s speech after the presidential election. Some voters below the platform applauded loudly for the new president and expressed their happiness. Because the president was elected by the entire American citizens and they had chosen the president from their mind. It made me think about the vote in China. We always said the phrases “People’s Representatives” in our daily life. It means a few of people could represent all of us to elect the members of government such as the president of China. In a way, because there are too many people in China so that we can’t choose the government by ourselves. If everyone voted in the public, it would cause a lot of big problems. But on the other hand, this policy deprives most people's democratic rights in China because we never know who represent us to elect the president and how many votes he got. So changing this situation usually needs a long period of time. But I still believe the Chinese government  always care about people's feeling.

Enthusiastic Uyghur

The Uyghurs live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. It is one of China's ethnic minorities, but the population is about 10 million. Uyghur history is the story of a small nomadic tribe from the Altai Mountains rising to challenge the Chinese Empire. Ultimately, the Uyghur became one of the provinces be administered by the government of the People's Republic of China. But the Uyghur still has some privileges which are different from the other provinces such as the aspects of education, laws, finance and so on.

The Uyghur people are really good at singing and dressing up. They have the unique style of music. It’s totally different from common Chinese classic music. Especially, when some festivals, they will put on Uyghur national costumes and sing or dance all the day with their friends or families.

Uyghur is also a place which is rich in fruit and animal husbandry because of the climate. The temperature of Uyghur between the day and the night is so different so that the fruit need to store much more sugar to sustain its growth. So the fruit in Uyghur usually tastes very sweet and I also like the Uyghur mutton strings very much. You can see Uyghurs sell them in every corner of China.

You can't miss this game!

My American friend once told me that he always ate a lot in “Super Bowl Sunday” because he had been sitting front the TV for a long period of time. According to this typical case, we can see the importance of football in Americans’ mind. American Football is a team sport played by two teams of people with 11 players on each side. It is played with a ball that is pointed at both ends. Points are scored by one team getting the ball into the end zone of the other team. Usually, some cheerleading and bands will perform during the break of game. In my opinion, American Football is a sport which needs lots of power and physical contact, so many Asian people can’t adapt to this game. However, it is indeed the most popular sport in the United States. You can find the products of American Football culture everywhere in the United States.

Adin Randall— Eau-Claire Builder

This was my first time stop in Adin Randall’s statue. There was a man sitting on the chair with bright and piercing eyes. There are some words carved on the foundation, said Adin Randall who gave this park to the city of Eau-Claire. Obviously, without searching for the background, I guess he was an unusual man. When I tasted this sentence generally, I knew he was a man who contributed a lot to Eau-Clair. That’s why people built a sculpture here to commemorate him. I found some natives here to talk about it, but unfortunately no one was so familiar with his contribution, but they all knew he was a person who built this park. According to the history of Eau-Claire, Adin Randall was a builder who first input timber to Eau-Claire so that made the Eau-Claire thrived. He had faced bankrupt, but he also had experienced of wealthy. He was a challenging and ambitious man who never gave up, and never felt enough. His life was fulfilled besides a poor ending. Although he died very young, the city without his contribution couldn’t be as developed as today. So the famous sculptress whose name is Helen Farnsworth Mears built this statue in memory of his contribution. I visited this statue in a rainy day, in honor of the history behind it with respect.

My Definition of Culture

In my opinion, the definition of culture is a group of specific people in an area that works to create their own spiritual wealth, and then handed down from generation to generation. It gradually accumulates and becomes the symbol of a nation. Such as ethics, beliefs, values, and even behavior, which becomes the customs of life which we usually called "The Culture". Typically, when Americans write articles, they prefer to put the key sentence at the beginning of the paragraph in order to directly express the meaning of article to the reader, and to make them clearly understand what the writer wants to say. But in Chinese articles, the topic sentence is usually on the last sentence of the last paragraph, or even sometimes Chinese writers simply do not write it down on the paper, they just let the reader think about it. I think this example shows that there are differences between these two cultures. It means Americans like to be straight, while the Chinese like to have some reservations in mind. Whichever they prefer, there is a big difference between cultures. On the other hand, we can say that this is "culture" because of these differences, if all the cultures of world are the same, and then there is no "culture" to speak of.
